Venice is worried about being overwhelmed by tourists. To prevent overcrowding as global travel rises again, Venetian city leaders will start requiring visitors next year to pay for entry to the city. They are also acquiring the cellphone data of unwitting tourists and using hundreds of surveillance cameras to monitor visitors and prevent crowding.

Have you ever had a vacation ruined by too many people? What do you think about the measures being taken in Venice: Are they necessary to fix an overcrowded tourist destination, or a misguided overreach? Will restrictions like these ruin the iconic city’s charm — or restore it? What sort of sacrifices, if any, would you be willing to make on vacation in the interest of preventing “magical” places from being overrun?

Tell us in the comments, then read the related article to learn more about Venice’s tourist surveillance plans.
