Chocolate sandwich is a chocolate lover’s delight. These tasty and gooey chocolate sandwiches are made with chocolate chips, whole wheat bread, butter and a mix of dry fruits like cashews, pistachios, and raisins. Make these easy choco sandwiches as a fun after-school snack or as an evening snack.
About Chocolate Sandwich
There are many ways a chocolate sandwich can be made with various kinds of chocolates. This recipe makes for crispy, toasty and sweet chocolate sandwiches featuring chocolate chips and dry fruits.
Do use good quality chocolate chips. I have used Callebaut Belgian sweet chocolate chips here which are made from couverture chocolate. Swap the chocolate chips with a good brand of cooking or baking chocolate.
You can use your preferred type of chocolate – sweet, semi-sweet, milk or dark chocolate. All work well in the recipe. But the sweetness will vary with the type of chocolate added. So dark chocolate won’t taste as sweet as milk chocolate or sweet chocolate.
We are fans of chocolate. There are various ways one can have chocolate and this chocolate sandwich is one such delicious way. Kids love these sandwiches and even grown-ups cannot say no to them if they are chocolate lovers.
This chocolate sandwich is a quick and easy to prepare sweet snack, which gets done in no time. We do prefer sandwiches made with chocolate sauce. I will share that recipe too, which takes some more time, than making this quick sandwich recipe.
To make these quick sandwiches, all you need are some bread slices, butter, chocolate chips and some dry fruits. Assemble and grill or toast the sandwiches. Done and serve. The recipe can easily be scaled up by increasing the proportions.
How to make Chocolate Sandwich
1. First chop some dry fruits. I have used cashews, pistachios and raisins. If you prefer, you can add nuts like almonds, walnuts, pecans, pinenuts etc. Instead of raisins you can dried apricot.
These nuts give a nice crunch in the gooey melted chocolate inside the sandwiches.
2. Take the bread slices. Slice the edges if you want. Spread some softened butter on each slice. You can use salted or unsalted butter.
Wheat bread, multigrain bread or Brown bread or White bread or Sandwich bread are all great options to make these sandwiches. But just ensure that your bread has a soft and light crumb. You can also use 1 to 2 day old bread that has been refrigerated.
3. Now place the choco chips evenly on the bread slices. Keep in mind not to add too much as then the chocolate melts and oozes out of the bread while grilling and toasting.
Instead of choco chips, you can use any type of baking or cooking chocolate like sweet or semi-sweet chocolate or milk chocolate.
Depending upon the size of the bread add the required amount of chocolate chips. Here I have used smaller-sized bread.
4. Sprinkle the chopped dry fruits on top. You can also add slices of fruits like apples, pears or bananas as a topping on the sandwiches.
5. Sprinkle a light pinch of ground cinnamon powder. This step can be skipped. You can even use cardamom powder.
6. Now cover with the remaining buttered slices.
7. Place the sandwich in a preheated sandwich toaster or grill or a panini press.
8. Grill or toast till the bread becomes crispy and browned. Serve chocolate sandwich hot or warm as it is or with a side of chocolate sauce to dip your sandwiches in it – for an overload of chocolate deliciousness.
You can sprinkle some confectioners sugar or powdered sugar from the top if you want.
Enjoy them hot or warm while the chocolate is still gooey and melted. On cooling, the chocolate will condense and solidify. The toasted bread texture will also soften and will become less crispy with time.
How to toast or grill Chocolate Sandwich on a skillet or frying pan
Instead of using a sandwich maker you can also toast these sandwiches on a cast-iron skillet or frying pan.
To do so, spread some butter on the skillet or frying pan. Place the prepared sandwich in the center of the skillet. On low heat toast or grill the sandwich on the skillet. Press the top of the sandwich with a spatula or you can keep a heavy weight on it like a plate or mortar-pestle or a tray.
When the bottom has become crusty and golden then quickly spread some softened butter on the top and gently flip the sandwich with a spatula. Toast the second side until golden and crisp.
With a spatula transfer the toasted and crispy golden chocolate sandwich on a serving plate. This way toast or grill the remaining sandwiches in batches.

- Instead of chocolate chips you can use any good brand of cooking or baking chocolate.
- The varieties of chocolate chips or baking chocolate that can be included are – sweet, semi-sweet, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. But keep in mind that the sandwiches made with dark chocolate or chocolates that are not sweet enough will be less sweet and have a slight bitter taste.
- Use any type of bread as long as it has a soft and light crumb.
- The recipe can be doubled or tripled for kids’ parties to feed a crowd.
