Tiktok was the most-downloaded app in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2021, while YouTube was the app with the most revenue. But YouTube and HBO Max share a unique distinction: both are the only apps on both the most-downloaded and the highest-earning top lists.

App Annie released its quarterly app trends report today with the top apps in the U.S. and globally.

The top 10 apps by downloads, as usual, were dominated by Facebook, with three apps in the top 10:

  1. TikTok
  2. YouTube
  3. Facebook
  4. HBO Max
  5. Instagram
  6. Facebook Messenger
  7. Snapchat
  8. ZOOM Cloud Meetings
  9. Cash App
  10. Netflix

The top 10 apps by revenue, however, were dominated by streaming media companies and dating apps:

  1. YouTube
  2. HBO Max
  3. Tinder
  4. Disney+
  5. Twitch
  6. Pandora Music
  7. Google One
  8. BIG LIVE
  9. Hulu
  10. Bumble App

“The global app market broke its all-time record for spend again,” App Annie says. “At $34 billion, the Q2 quarterly total was around $7 billion up on the total for Q2 2020 and $2 billion up on Q1 2021.”

App Annie also studied how much time we’re spending on mobile, and if that’s decreased as the lockdowns and quarantines of 2020 have subsided in 2021. On that front there’s bad news for those who think having your nose buried in a smartphone for hours on end is bad for your mind, your neck, and maybe even your social life.

All that extra time we added to our mobile usage during lockdown has basically become a habit even halfway through 2021. Our average daily time spent in apps is still massive. And it continues to be up more than 40% in countries like Russia and Turkey compared to 2019 levels.

Top countries by daily hours spent in apps:

  1. Brazil: 5.4 hours
  2. Indonesia: 5.3 hours
  3. India: 4.9 hours
  4. South Korea: 4.8 hours
  5. Mexico: 4.7 hours
  6. Turkey: 4.5 hours
  7. Japan: 4.4 hours
  8. Canada: 4.1 hours
  9. USA: 3.9 hours
  10. UK: 3.8 hours
  11. Russia: 3.7 hours
  12. Agentina: 3.6 hours
  13. Australia: 3.5 hours
  14. France: 3.5 hours
  15. Germany: 3.5 hours
  16. China: 3.1 hours

Interestingly, there’s a major difference between the top breakout growth apps in the U.S. versus other countries around the world — especially Europe.

“The leading breakout apps in the EMEA countries are dominated by those directly related to the pandemic. They focus on information, immunisation and contact tracing,” App Annie says. “Looking at the U.S.’s top breakout apps (those with the most dramatic growth over the previous quarter), it’s notable how none has any direct relationship to COVID immunization or contact tracing.”

Relatively new apps with significant growth in the U.S. include PictureThis, which tells you the name of a plant when you take a picture of it, and Poparazzi, a social app that is explicitly anti-selfie.
