Many health insurance policies, particularly senior citizen covers, come with co-pay clauses. Standardised Arogya Sanjeevani policies, too, comes with co-pay of 5 percent. Usually, these ratios range from 5 percent to 30 percent. This is how it works: let’s say your policy’s co-pay ratio is 10 percent and the claim amount approved by your insurer is Rs 1 lakh. So, you will have to pay Rs 10,000 before the insurer takes care of the balance Rs 90,000. Policies with co-pay are cheaper and you can consider these if you are unable to obtain policies at reasonable premiums due to age or health conditions. Else, it’s best to go with restriction-free policies as this clause dilutes their utility value.
