Google Photos is trying out an entirely new feature that could change the way we share photos and video.

Thanks to some typically revealing forensic work from software sleuth Jane Manchun Wong, we can now see a new “Ask Friends For Photos” feature currently lying dormant within the Google Photos app, as revealed in the following tweet.

The feature, which may or may not eventually go live in the app, offers a new way to fill in any gaps in your photo collection by requesting them from your friends via a custom link. According to the sample text, the link “will allow friends and family with Google Photos to easily share with you in bulk”.

MORE FOR YOU

As the sample link received by Wong doesn’t currently work, it’s not yet known how the feature might differ from the existing shared album concept. Perhaps be used to fill in gaps in your own albums rather than creating new ones.

What we do know is that the feature only works between Google Photos users. This would make it a great new way for Google to grow its user base by sending out request links that also prompt non-users to sign up and share.
