Emma Calvert had herself quite the senior season with the Fremont High School girls’ basketball team.

She helped the Silverwolves go undefeated in their region for the fourth straight season. She helped the Silverwolves to a 6A state championship — the team’s second in four years — and a 26-0 season. She led the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game and field goal percentage at 63.1%.

Calvert added to her stellar season last week when she was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for girls’ basketball in Utah. She’s the first from Fremont to win the award for her sport.

“I was really excited,” Calvert said of winning the award. “I had been hoping for this award for a while.”

Calvert joins accomplished women’s basketball players who won the award for their state, such as Maya Moore, Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker.

“I have a lot of respect for all those women that have won it and then have gone on to do really amazing things in their careers,” Calvert said. “I’m just hoping that I can follow in their footsteps [and] I can do something amazing with my college career and just get better from here on.”

Calvert will play basketball at BYU this coming season and is excited about the level of play that is in front of her.

“I get to be around a lot of really talented athletes and girls who are just willing to put in the same amount of time and effort,” Calvert said while also acknowledging the high quality of players Fremont’s team had. “I’m just excited to go meet new people and have a really good team.”

Fremont’s success gave it the opportunity to compete in the GEICO Nationals in April, where it fell to Westlake from Atlanta, Georgia. But that experience is just one of the many Calvert will always remember as a member of the Silverwolves.

Calvert also credited her teammates and coaches for putting her in the position to win the Gatorade award.

“I’m really happy and I’m just grateful for it and all the people who helped me get to it,” Calvert said. “I couldn’t have got that all by myself.”
