Money For Nothing, And The Chicks For Free
Background Story: This classic rock song was released in June of 1985, and is performed by
Dire Straits and Sting. The song is about rock star excess, and the supposedly easier lifestyle
that rock stardom brings; when compared to a real 9-to-5 job. Mark Knopfler [the lead singer]
wrote this song after overhearing delivery men in a New York City department store complain
about their jobs while watching MTV on a store television. Mark wrote that song in the store
while he was sitting at a kitchen display. Almost all of the song lyrics were things that those
delivery men actually said to each other (including the faggot and chimpanzee references).
In other words, the song was written from the viewpoint of stupid characters (those delivery
men) who think that musicians make their ‘Money for Nothing’… Also, stupidity is what lead
those men to make some ignorant statements; which were all included in these song lyrics.
Note: Sting is also credited with writing this song. ‘Chicks for Free’ are the female groupies.
PS: The video below was one of the first to ever feature computer generated animation, and
the video shows the different items that those delivery men delivered to various customers.
